Quite a few of them, actually. Later on, we’ll trumpet the names of the winners (or their monikers at least) in the pages of this blog (EDIT: actually the other blog), but for now we’re e-mailing the applicants personal e-mails to let them know of the final decision.
Again, the quality of applications was beyond outstanding. The committee had its toughest time deciding how best to split the (quite limited) funds to ensure that the most qualified applicants receive a grant, and the most qualified applicants receive substantial amounts equal to the depth and breadth of their proposal. As we should have anticipated, there were a couple of applicants who didn’t make the last and final cut, but should have. We hated to cut them. It was a painful decision.
To everyone who applied: thank you. We are humbled and gratified at the tremendous response.

What happened to History Commons ? The forum appears to be shut down. Most of the timelines have stopped adding entries–though they are incomplete at best. There is little incusion of books and interveiws as there is in Paul Thompson’s Complete 911 Timeline. There is little outreach to blogs or webs–remember what Daily Kos did for Paul. A little promotion coiuld do wonders for content, enduse, and fundraising!

I agree that the commons has “limited time lines
at BESt.. I was following them…To My chagrin, they are now impossible to assimilate.

Is there something that could make them easier to assimilate? Your comment concerns me, and I’d like to know what makes them so difficult for you to process and what ideas you have for improving the situation.

It probably doesn’t help any rejoinder I could make when I didn’t see and approve your post for nine days. 😦 Actually, there is a lively discussion going on at the History Commons Groups blog. This blog is, by definition, less active.
Having said that, let me address the rest of your post. It is not true at all that “most timelines have stopped adding entries.” Hundreds of entries have been added in recent days. I won’t sing sad songs about how much work it takes to produce a single entry, but it is true, the work level can be considerable. We are working mightily to extend the site. We’ve opened up several new projects, added seven new grant recipients who are contributing material, and in all are working steadily to build the Commons.
It is true that the forum is, for all intents and purposes, dead. The discussion now takes place in the Groups blog.
We stopped doing book reviews and interviews years ago, though we have done some book reviews recently on the blog. “Paul Thompson’s Complete 9/11 Timeline” is a misnomer, the Complete 9/11 Timeline is an integral part of the Commons but not a separate, standalone “adjunct” or “sister site.”
As for outreach, you’re right, we need to do more along those lines. It is necessary to point out, though, that we are not a partisan site, and as much as some contributors (such as myself!) may appreciate the Daily Kos, Firedoglake, Think Progress, and other sites, we emphatically do NOT promote a particular political or social agenda. We provide facts; you provide the opinion.
I invite you to give us a hand in reaching out to other sites and communities. You’ve put your finger on a real lack; can you help us correct it?

How about a one page download on who and what HISTORY COMMONS is? Then ask supporters to put in the bulletin board or handout desk at a college or university-or to put it the mailboxes of faculty at the same.
