We’re approaching the final stages of the site redesign, where we will actually unveil it to a breathless public 🙂 very soon. Here’s your chance to tell us what you’d like to see in the new site. Different organization? Different colors? More interactivity? What would make the site work better for you? Sound off.

  1. Hello Max!

  4. How does one start a new project?

  5. Hi, Ben. The old process was to run the idea by some of the various folks behind the scenes–me, Paul, and ultimately Derek. If everyone decides it’s a good idea that we need to cover, then it gets created and you (and whoever else) begins populating it with entries. With this handy-dandy new blog, I don’t see why you couldn’t put up a proposal for a new project in this thread. Why not write up a quick proposal and post it here?

  6. Hi Max. What I would like to see is something with more multimedia integration… it would be great to have hi-res photos, document scans, the P2OG powerpoint, collapse videos, etc etc. available when connected to a related entry. Like, have the unedited bush at the school video available when you click on the entries concerning Bush’s actions on 9/11. Likewise with bin laden videos or highjackers at airport security, etc. This is something I have talked to Paul about over email before but I didn’t have the organizational skills to really follow through with it. I have a huge collection of documents and photos and videos, and I would like to help, but it would be kind of a long term thing and I would probably need help from other people who have stuff compiled/collected.

I feel like this site is the final word as far as amazing information presented in a thorough and organized way. But it would be great to have you guys hosting some of the documentary evidence to researchers who use this site as a resource.

  7. Thomas, this is an excellent idea that we’ve talked about a good bit. Kevin maintains some sort of video storage on YouTube, but it isn’t well linked to the main site and therefore isn’t easy for users to access when they find an entry related to the documents and videos that we have.

I’ll alert Kevin and the others about your comment. This is something I’d definitely like to see us implement. And thanks for the kind words.

  8. Hi Thomas,

The HistoryCommons YouTube channel can be found here:

Generally, I occasionally post something there related to the content we have. For example, there is a video of Bush at the school, which is linked to from this entry:

Unfortunately, there is no way to indicate that a link is to a video in the text of a timeline entry yet, which is maybe why you haven’t noticed it.

There are only a few videos (35 at the moment). It would be great to have more. If you have some videos you think would be good to post at our YouTube channel, you could send a sample to us and then we could put them up.

Don’t know anything about powerpoint presentations, I’m not entirely sure that’s something we’d go for. We talked about having a document archive, but we only submit very occasional FOIA requests so there would not be that much there, and this idea is on hold at the moment.

  9. Hi Max and Kevin, thanks for your response, and for the links. I will check those out.

The only powerpoint presentation i was referring to is the leaked P2OG presentation from the Defense Science Board, which was mentioned in the timeline. Other things which would be cool to have is stuff like Tony Blairs original “White Paper” of evidence against bin laden, and maybe some of the Moussoui trial evidence, which might tie into certain timeline events for the highjackers. IE, in the Ziad Jarrah profile there is some confusion about there being 2 Jarrahs which I find very compelling. One of the events is Jarrah being in Afganistan and in Lebanon simultaneously, but there has been video released of Jarrah with Atta in Afganistan, which is timestamped. So that would be a cool thing to have linked in there.

I think a document archive would be good to have all the public domain information in one place, not just things which history commons got through FOIA. I will look through my stuff and see if theres anything I think might be good for the youtube channel.

  10. Thomas, anything you find will be more than welcome. I tend to agree with you that a document archive is a good idea. Not sure we have the server capability to do it, but the idea itself has merit.

  11. A document Archive organized by Tags is absolutely crucial.
